Volunteer Spirit Day - March 19, 2016
On Saturday (March 19) twelve club members gathered at the Boy Scout Trail to participate in the WATeR organization annual cleanup day. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed a few hours of walking, talking and picking up litter wherever we could find it. All in all, about 12 bags were loaded into the dumpster. Many thanks to Jane Stephens for coordinating this event and all that showed up to help.
For the second year in a row, the Illinois Club was mentioned in the Connection newspaper (Wed – March 25 edition)!! In case you missed it, here is an excerpt from the article: Illinois Club members Dennis and Lesia Kotlinski said they moved from Illinois eight years ago and have participated in the event for six or seven years. Dennis said he wanted to help out “just to make Tennessee look good. You know, we’re proud to be down here, …when they come in to visit for the first time and you see litter on the roads, that just looks awful. We have a lot of pride in our little Village here, and in East Tennessee.” Lesia added, “We absolutely love it here”. The couple cleaned up a section along Highway 444 before meeting up with other Illinois Club members near a walking trail off the parkway.
As predicted, everyone worked up an appetite and gathered at the Tanasi Restaurant for hearty lunch and retelling of all the treasures we picked up along the trail.
